Hello everyone,
in this article I will give my candidate for the song contest Lesley is organizing. It is expected my song will get low points cause it is Croatian and you don't know what is it saying but this song is connected with me and I cannot put any other in front of it. Because you wont understand the words, I will try to explain the meaning and the reason why am I connected with the song.
"Dalmacija, more, ja i ti" translated as "Dalmatia, the sea, you and me" performed by Vinko Coce is a beautiful ode to Dalmatia and its Mediterranean spirit. As you can conlcude from the title, this song talks not only about love, it talks about our connection with Dalmatia which is part of our life and part of that love. When I was younger I always asked myself why does everyone in Dalmatia cheer for Hajduk Split (football club), why people dont cheer for the club from their place. My grandfather, when asked, took the map of Croatia and pointed out the dots and the lines on the map. He said: "You see these lines, of the regions, of the cities. They are imaginary, made only for easier administration. In reality, Dalmatia has no borders; Split, Zadar, Imotski etc, they are all one, Dalmatia is all one!" When growing up, I started realizing that. Dalmatia is not just a place; it is a spirit of togetherness, tradition, and love for life. I have read in some American post written by some blogger that they Americans have more money than Dalmatians, can afford more maybe but when walking on the American streets you will see nervous and sad faces. While in Dalmatia people are happy, no matter the money, cause they enjoy simple things; coffee by sea, looking and the sun and just being relaxed; fjaka.
When I was finishing my university in Portugal and living abroad for that half of the year, I realized how much am I connected with Dalmatia, with Split and with people there. Every day I was just thinking of the day I will go back, even though I had a great time traveling the world and Porto is a beautiful city. Every day I called people on a videocall just to show me around, to have a picture in my head what and who is waiting for me. The fact that I was going home on Hajduk football matches then makes we wonder what would be if I needed to stay for 2 3 months in a row haha, I would probably go crazy and drop the year.
For that reason this song is my favourite. Love to Dalmatia and the way of our life and hope future me will achieve the point of the song, calm family life by the sea. As the lyrics of one other songs say, all you need for love is a women, a man and the sea and the little house of salt on the coast.
Lyrics:
When the sun is gone to the bed
And when the gull lands on the ridge
The force of silence embrace the sea
A man is able to fly without wings
When the sun is gone to bed
The lantern lights light on the sea
Calm the sails, stop the boats
I want to listen to the sea while it rolls the beaches
How beautiful is this summer night
When strand talks to the sea
That smell bewithces me
And when pine trees release their smell
How beautiful is to be under the sky
Under serene sky of my love
Dalmatia, sea, me and you
When the sun is gone to bed
And when wind slows down on the sea
The lantern lights light silently
I miss only your lips
How beautiful is this summer night
When strand talks to the sea
That smell bewithces me
And when pine trees release their smell
How beautiful is to be under the sky
Under serene sky of my love
Dalmatia, sea, me and you
I cant say it was a hard choice but I really like music, all kinds of it. When I was young I was singing in best high school choir in Croatia but didnt findd myself there. I didnt like the music that much haha. As you cant get my taste of the music from this one song you cant understand, I will list few more as my top picks in their categories.
Rock: Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Rap: F*** Tha Police by N.W.A. (sorry insomnia)
Pop: Counting starts by One Republic
House: Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO
EDM: Wake Me Up by Avicii
Party: I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
Hajduk: Zbog Jedne Ljubavi by Torcida
Trap: Forza by Grše
TurboFolk: Potopiću Ovaj Splav by Stoja
Dalmatinske: Sveta zemlja Dalmacija by Bepo Matešić
Domaće: Ti si mi u mislima by Dino Dvornik
The style is pretty confusing but I guess in my case, the type of songs I will listen depends on the position I am in currently. I cant say I am bigger fan of some category than the other cause I have been on concerts of all these above, from 50 cent to Avicii (on Ultra Music Festival). My favourite artist is and will always be Oliver Dragojević!

I'm looking for songs that I can enjoy even if I don't understand the language, and this is definitely one of them.
